The good news for IT professionals is that there are jobs available in this still weak economy. In most market areas there are jobs at every level, though the largest groupings of employment available are at the top end of highly skilled and trained pros, and at the bottom end where you will find minimally trained help desk and support jobs. The average of salaries for these jobs is in the mid to low $70,000 range, which is pretty much where it has been for a few years now. Whether due to the sluggish recovery of the economy, the exporting of many IT jobs overseas, or too many people seeking too few jobs, the salaries have stagnated.
At the bottom end in the tech support areas such as help desk support, salaries begin in the 20,000 range for someone with a reasonable skill level, though many of these jobs have gone off shore. It is very common to call a tech support line, or do an online chat and be talking with someone in India. The salaries there are meager compared to the West and the employees plentiful. The next level of IT Professional would be experienced and/or certified tech support where salaries begin in the low $30,000 range.
For these jobs, more specific experience is desired. Not like trying to find Paramedic Training. These include desktop support, network and software support and hardware repair. There is expected growth in these jobs and with added skills and experience one can expect added incentive from employers looking to hire and retain. At the higher end salary range over $75,000, employees must have the skills that are most sought after in today’s IT environment, and the flexibility to keep up with the changes that they will face. Virtual Server management and Network Engineering, Web design with advanced skills in apps like Flash, SAP and other business models of software products are all needing software design and implementation engineers and managers and sales people.
